Comparative Background of the Protagonists - RISHBALA

Madhubala birth place is the film's set itself. Her birth was realized and celebrated in totally filmi style. She grew up in close association with this world. Yet she did not want to make films part of her life/dreams in any manner. She did not need films to find happiness.

Superstar RK in the contrary not born on film sets, but he made it his dream to become a star. He found happiness, power and everything missing in life through the films...

Their story is unraveling amazingly and I am just getting engrossed in the Junoon as well as the Ishq'.DVD are just amazing and the CVs are doing a fabulous job'.keeping the intensity going for 3-4 weeks continuously isn't an easy task '.and they have managed to do so with finesse'.anyways'u all know this'there are umpteen number of posts on that already'.so why come out of my self-induced silence'.well nothing too great'but I was just analyzing Madhu's and Rk's past and the similarity just caught me'.
Both of them have faced similar situations in life'but there is a small difference'.it's as if they are mirror images of each other'on the surface they look same'but the right is left and left is right:
  • Madhu's biological father wanted to kill her and hated her and hence she hates him as well. RK's biological father loved him and nutured him and so did RK.
  • Madhu lives because the biological father believes she is dead and hence they are separated. RK's biological father died and so did the innocent little Rishab.
  • Madhu's strength is her mother, as she defied the world for her little angel. RK's weakness is his mom, as she succumbed to the world and married an excuse for a father. A step father who needs saving. Though both the mothers are sweet, Paddy is strong, whereas Radha is weak.
  • Madhu has been blessed with a step dad, who loves her more than his own life. And she sacrificed herself for his well-being. RK has been cursed with a pompous step dad, who just commands respects, but doesn't deserve any. Given a choice RK would love to destroy and insult him, but his weakness (read mom) prevents him from doing so.
  • Madhu loves her step-sibling, so much so that she considered her sis's dreams more important than her own life (engagement). RK loathes his step-sibling. Trishna and Sikandar are kind of alike'they are opportunist and jealous of their step-siblings success. But, I think Trishna has some self-respect in her and is courageous (Balla's blood after all). Whereas Sikandar would love to butter-up RK, but he knows that RK would never help him. Moreover, he is a scardy cat (as is obvious from the kukad incident)
  • Another similarity pointed out by Shridevigaddam -

Madhubala birth place is the film's set itself. Her birth was realized and celebrated in totally filmi style. She grew up in close association with this world. Yet she did not want to make films part of her life/dreams in any manner. She did not need films to find happiness.

Superstar RK on the contrary not born on film sets, but he made it his dream to become a star. He found happiness, power and everything missing in life through the films...
So, the ingredients are the same, yet the recipes are different and so is the flavor. Smile It will be fun to see how this concoction of ingredients tastes in the end. It is obvious that Rishbala will grow closer as they tread each other's paths in life and finally when they totally understand each other their paths will merge forever!!!Embarrassed

EPIC SCALE STORY ELEMENTS

Great Analysis. Yeah, I was surprised at first he called Madhubala that girl. I saw that moment as him lashing out at  all the women in his life. For RK, its Dad>World.  He feels betrayed by both his mom and now his wife. There is great resentment towards females in his life in general. Its the way he treats paddy, Trishna and Roma also. He is especially poisonous towards them. He knows just where to stab them. Although he hates his stepdad, the choice of words do not have that greater effect on them. I think he can see that. I wonder how his deep resentment will change, He definitely needs to make peace with his past and stop blaming his mom for it before he can even start falling in love with Madhubala. A lot of people think his passion will translate to love. I dunno, that leads to even a more abusive and distasteful situation. I love the character though, he is like an onion, full of layers.Big smile

Kangto09,

I completely agree with the bolded portion. Until he makes peace with his past, there's not going to be any love at all. All we are gonna see on the screen is RK's OCD behaviour.

The show creatives should not have involved all the elements of the story in EPIC style. Madhubala has her own story - Balraj backround that RK needs to know one day. RK has his side of story - the demise of RK's father and Bhatia backround that MB needs to know one day.  Then RK has his own plans to build a destiny for MB- that of making her a heroine, a superstar.
As all the events around these elements get interwoven in time, a story in epic style is gonna unfold. True, a serialised story telling serves the purpose, but the current TRP driven TV format may not be helpful for the show at all.

Presently RK will get busy alienating MB from the life she knows and drag her into cine-world. Even a one film project to get launched, executed will take a minimum of 6 months and a max time of could be any number of months or years. And if in making of her as the new starlet, would the creatives delve into side plots. No issues at all. However an epic moves around the primary characters themselves. So they will have to be there. So I am worried how all these stories will have their delivery schedule before the TV audience. Starting from June, with barely being a two month old show, people and even critics started telling off the story's potential. So much that people suspected the Channel deciding the show to be taken off air.

In such competitive environment, will the creatives be able to deliver a story? Finally ONE SHOW that actually has EPIC length story and which calls for patience from the impatient TV audience. I wonder if it would survive the competition and be able to do justice to the characters and their epic scale story.

My BEST WISHES for the Creatives.

Jaya's walk to Siddhi Vinayak Temple for AB's life inspires MEIEJ track of Madhu walking to Siddhi Vinayak for RK's life.

read a post of a fan on facebook about  Amitabh Bachchan...who was badly hurted during shooting of movie coolie in 1982..

I Googled it and found this...

...Bachchan, who wanted to do that shot himself rather than use a duplicate, had to fall on a table and then roll on to the ground. But as he jumped towards the table, the corner of the table hit his abdomen leading to a rupture in his spleen causing a lot of blood loss.

It can be recalled that during that illness Bachchan, in fact, clinically died for eleven minutes

In a last ditch attempt to revive him, the doctors plunged an adrenaline injection into his heart and hoped that he would return'

Suddenly Jaya Bachchan saw Amitabh's toe move and she exclaimed, "Look he is alive".

It took that one injection to get him back. Amitabh was alive again.

While he was fighting for his life, fans from across the country thronged to the hospital. There were people who even cycled or walked their way to Mumbai just to pray for him.

And it was probably these prayers that saved Bachchan as well, not to take away anything from Dr Farokh Udwadia and his battery of doctors who worked hard to save him

thought this could be interesting.. MEIEJ being show inspired in the film industry.. it can be the CV's got inspired by Mr Bachchan's incident  for this track.. :)

Big B, Amitabh Bachchan suffered a near-fatal accident during the shoot of Manmohan Desai's 'Coolie' (1983); he required 17 bottles of blood to recoup. AB has, ever since, been championing the cause of blood donation.

When Amitabh was in the ICU of Breach Candy Hospital after the 'Coolie' accident, Jaya Bachchan used to walk barefoot daily from the Hospital to the Siddhi Vinayak Temple, six kilometres away, praying for his quick recovery.

this track has been for sure inspired on this.. there are to much similarities..

Re, Karva Chouth and Diwali tracks - lagging behind the actual calender
Since I come from Doordarshan background, I am more happy if festivals are not used as filler episodes and fashion trends. Doordarshan, had a policy not to make it religious propaganda unless festival matters to the story.
I like the way MEIEJ is using them for real progression of the story and that they are not following any timelines. Both Ganesh Chathurti and Karva Chouth are related to Madhu's background linked to Padmini. So its like MAdhu's beliefs and faith driving the story with RK's reaction to it causing the permanent shift in their relationships. For that matter, Mata ka Jargata had also the meaning in terms of societal status of the relationship, for them and all others involved, the way both see who is their family.

MEIEJ - The making and Promoting of the show, since inception and until Episode 130

the MB powers-that-be announced two things that two sections of the viewers now especially want to see in the series - 'a dark love story' and 'Madhu becoming a filmstar'.
And they would each like to see what they were promised at the earliest. Which is eminently understandable.
The MB CVs have only themselves to blame for the fact that their fine hard work in characterizing the lead pairing is not getting the undivided attention that is its due.
They were idiotic enough to prioritize suspense, and almost took the serial into fatal convulsions thereby.
First the serial was supposed to be named 'Shikhar' (peak/pinnacle), but they scrapped that as too revealing.
Then they opted for 'Kathputli' (puppet), and decided against that for the same reason.
Then they picked 'Madhubala' and almost ended up in litigation because actual people associated with the real filmstar Madhubala thought the series was going to be about her.
Having erred with the title through desire to keep the story too much under wraps, they then blundered again after the fantastic beginning - when the story really needed to hit its stride.
They pretended that their own promos of RK moulding Madhubala into a star had slipped out of mind.
RK was introduced not soon enough after the adult Madhu's entry, and even after he was introduced, a huge amount of focus was placed on the Mukund track.
There were people who started to ship the Madhu-Mukund pairing under the impression that RK was going to be the villain. That was how messed up the presentation was getting.
And recent news items reveal that even the actor playing Mukund ended up with that hopeful impression.
One of the cable networks finally stopped playing along with the 'red herring' express, and changed the series-synopsis for MB, removing the word 'tragic'.
Saurabh Tiwari recently admitted that things got so bad that the series faced the possibility of being wrapped up.
They had to change the track they were heading for so meanderingly  - of making Madhu a heroine (presumably through RK in the Pygmalion-Galatea mould as shown in the pre-series promos) and then having her and RK fall in love.
Instead, they had to switch tracks to the fast-lane and opt for the guaranteed lifesaver of having Madhu and RK getting married and falling in love first, and then Madhu becoming a filmstar, presumably under her husband's aegis bus almost assuredly for his sake if the scene of the defunct 'Sitara Studios' is to hold.
The current pace and track is going beautifully. If the CVs stick with the story that was shown in the promos, it will be a dark love story *and* Madhu will become a filmstar, but all at the right pace rather than in haste. Just hope they stick with the pace they have going now.
They went slow enough with the Madhu-Mukund track which was just supposed to be a means to have her and RK clash and meet that the series almost came to a halt.
This time, let them stick with the proper pace for the track as it now is. Lord, I do hope so.
The Pygmalion-Galatea story tends to work in every incarnation so long as it is skilfully adapted. It worked as George Bernard Shaw's pragmatic play, and it also worked as the romantic 'My Fair Lady' film.
'Madhubala: Ek Ishq Ek Junoon' should turn out fantastically so long as the focus stays on the leads.
The lead pairing are outstandingly talented actors, get along well with each other *and* have mindblowing chemistry.
Please, God, let the CVs capitalize on that as the fabulous bonanza it isStar, and not go cavorting on any other Mukund-style experiments.
And really hope that at least now the CVs stop trying for suspense. That red-herring diet is likely to give the series a case of food-poisoning of indeterminate gravity if it keeps leading entire sections of the viewership up different garden paths.

Big action on the small screen

Televison show to air an action scene inspired by Sholay this weekend; producer spends R25 lakh on it

While TV shows replicate many aspects from Bollywood, including storylines, fashions and hit songs, action is one factor that doesn't find much space on the small screen. However, producer Saurabh Tewary is looking to change this and has shot an expensive action scene for his show Madhubala, which will be aired this weekend.
Vivian Dsena rides into action
In the show, Balraj (Raj Zutshi) kidnaps Madhu (Drashti Dhami) with a plan to kill her. RK (Vivian Dsena) lands at the location in a filmi manner to save his lady love. The action scene ends with Madhu's mother Padmini (Pallavi Purohit) shooting Balraj.
Saurabh says, "RK is a superstar in the show and the narrative has been larger-than-life. This sequence, too, has been shot in Bollywood style with the essence of a potboiler. There will also be a dance number by Jasveer Kaur to 'Gajar ne kiya hai isharaa' from Tridev (1989), while goons stand guard with shotguns and the villain enjoys himself. It's very Sholayesque. I think this is one of the biggest action sequences done on Indian TV." The scene was filmed at a set created at Filmcity near the lake. The fight sequence also involves stunt directors coordinating bomb blasts, bikes flying in the air and the fistfights. The cost of this scene is around R22- 25 lakh.
Saurabh adds that earlier on the show, they could have shot the Ganpati shootout scene on a smaller scale but to preserve the show's grandeur, it was shot at the Lalbaug Ganpati pandal. Action scenes on TV can be wrapped up with just two punches and a lengthy monologue, but upping things a notch is what sets this show apart.
Saurabh says, "Action scenes are a visual treat for the audiences. It's not as if people haven't seen it before in films like Rowdy Rathore (2012) and Dabangg (2010). There's no comparison being made, but grand scenes are a huge connect for viewers. There's a hero, a victim and lots of emotional drama involved."

About the same
Maze looto, cast ko dekhte hue...

Missing are Padmini, Balraj, RK, Bittuji and Roma.

Another hilarious segment.  People getting beaten up especially RK and Madhu. ... VD and also playing pranks. Wow!!! His hindi is actually very native. Very good...the accent is much better than his english.

And we have Bittuji, Balraj and Padmini here. No Roma !!!!

So much money spent, and three weeks of shooting..and just 4 episodes!!
As for the lakhs spent...Simple. ACTION Scenes COST a LOT. The action director and his Stuntsmen, do not come cheap. They risk their lives and hence the cost shoots up. There is a marked premium there. And all those guns, bombs/explosion, bike scene, planks, safety nets...will cost a lot. If you ask me for the set creation and the action scene, 22 lakhs is not that expensive.  One average sized marriage Pandal set up with decoration costs 5 lakhs easily. Don't you agree. And here the space was quite wide...So if you see in that sense, it is quite cheap.

And now coming to the crores that Sourabh Tewari spent in the initial action scenes in May and RK introduction week. He had to shoot partly in Ramoji Film City in Hyd and then FilmCity in Mumbai. And all of those scenes were ACTION scenes. So he ended up spending Crores along with Promo Shoots and all Promo campaigns.

TOI : Real life inspires telly soaps/ MB

TOI Article

Television, a medium which primarily targets women audience is now coming up with storylines that showcase social issues, particularly after the strong impact that the recent Delhi gang rape incident has made. Recent tracks in Parvarrish... Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi, Kaali... Ek Punar Avatar, Qubool Hai, Amrit Manthan, Har Yug Mein Ayega Ek Arjun,Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, et al have taken creative inspiration from real life incidents of honour killings, child trafficking, domestic violence and rape.

Amrit Manthan had a track where the protagonist stands up against crimes against women; in Madhubala.. Ek Ishq Ek Junoon is a victim of domestic violence who ran away to prevent female infanticide of her newborn shoots her devilish husband; Kaali.. Ek Punar Avatar is loosely based on the Nitish Katara honour killing case; Qubool Hai also had an entire track on honour killing; in Parvarrish... Kuch Khatti Kuch MeethiKaali... a teenager saves herself from a possible molestation and kidnap.

Call it a bid to introducing more relatable content or creating more awareness, TV shows are inspired from real life incidents in a big way. Prashant Bhatt, weekday programming head of a renowned General Entertainment Channel (GEC) says, "Social issues have always inspired television. Reel always takes inspiration from real life."

Banking just on real life incidents is not enough, say many. Producer Saurabh Tewary says, "TV soaps are moving away from the regular saas bahu dramas and with shows catering to women between 15-35 years ,the narrative has to be one that the audience can identify with. One must marry entertainment with the incidents so that there is synergy and the idea is in sync with the storyline."

Channel heads/producers and actors feel TV shows also need to do their bit in social reforms. "Audiences connect with stories on women empowerment," says Tewary. Concurs Bhatt, "If a show manages to bring in some positive changes in one life, the purpose is served. TV is not about setting fashion trends only."

Drawing inspiration from real life incidents, says Ajit Thakur, head and general manager of a GEC, is "another way of storytelling and content needs to reflect real life because that's more relatable." Actor Adaa Khan too seconds the move, "Everyone relates to the real life incidents.TV soaps are basically reflecting what is happening in the society. It is also our responsibility to emphasis on the need for change in the society."

As to whether reality finds a taker in the audience only time (and TRPs) will tell. Till then let the drama build up on the small screen.

Violence against women
The burning issue of female infanticide was the base point from where the subsequent tracks of Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon started off. Other shows that are currently talking about domestic violence et al, include Phir Subah Hogi, Junoon Aisi..., and Balika Vadhu

Honour killings
Barely months after Aamir Khan brought to light the Khap Panchayat's brutal honour killings in a Rajasthan village in Satyamev Jayate, TV soaps are using it for dramatic effect. Shows likeQubool Hai, Har Yug Mein Ayega Ek Arjun, Adaalat etc. have addressed the issue.

Real to reel
Loosely based on the Nitish Katara honour killing case, Kaali ..Ek Punar Avatar was given a prestigious 8 pm slot with Mangal Kenkre as the female protagonist fighting for justice . Other shows that have aped real to reel situations are Parvarrish Kuch Khatti Kuch MeethiAmrit Manthan and Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke (recent episodes in these shows took off from the Delhi gang rape case).

Expect 'big' twist in 'Madhubala...': Saurabh Tiwari

Avid viewers of Colors TV show "Madhubala - Ek Ishq Ek Junoon" should expect a major twist in its story, says producer Saurabh Tewari.
"I can't disclose much, but it is a big twist which will shock everyone," Tewari, head of Nautanki Films Pvt Ltd, told IANS.

The basic plot of the show revolves around Madhubala (Drashti Dhami), a simple girl, married to a film star named Rishabh Kundra aka RK (Vivian Dsena).

Re the Montages

MEIEJ Official Page on Facebook had this new montage from Jan 26th.
colors.in.com (the US website) has today changed to the new Montage...the Blue colored one.

My musings:

Old Montage - Selling a Promise of Heroine Track to Viewers.
It was never there...it might have started for that, but ST had to change the track to Love Story and yet the Montage was not changed as he wanted people to guess, now can she become heroine now that she got married to him where eventually hate marriage will become love marriage...we kind of get the premise.

New Montage - Selling a Promise of Rishbala Love Story to Viewers
We don't know if the big twist is about the love story to be broken. Will the saat phera marriage will happen. The question lurks, how will she enter films ? Why the heroine track montage is changed ? Will the loss in the personal love story then be the premise for Madhu to enter the films and gain public love. Then question is how Rishabh and Madhu get back to their love story with the NEW BLUE DREAMY montage where both of them are looking into each earnestly and seem to happy. May be it is just a promise...Why did they change it on Facebook on Jan 26th and I don't know since when they started showing it on TV and why they changed the montage on colors website today,
